Contrast Neck Tape

January 12, 2017 3 Comments

One of my first jobs as a  kids wear designer was for the Dutch brand Cakewalk - colorful, girly clothing with great detail. When designing a garment, creating great “hanger appeal” was considered an artform there - next to creating amazing garments from the outside, every garment was designed with great detail for the inside as well.

This kinda stuck with me. When I make something as a gift, I can’t help but adding a little something something - a contrast tape, crocheted flower, felt heart -  to the inside of the garment. It’s fun and people will love the extra effort and detail!

So let’s talk about adding a contrast bias neck tape to a sweater or t-shirt! For this tutorial I've used our new Charlie Tee pattern. I only use this technique in sweaters or t-shirts with a rib knit neckband or sweaters with a shoulder closure (like in this tutorial) - the bias tape will take away a little of the stretchability of the neckband, so keep that in mind!

Step 1.
Construct your garment until finishing the raw edge of your neckband. Open one side of the folded sides of your bias tape and pin it to the inside of your neckband - a little bit below the shoulders. Make sure the fold of the bias tape follows the stitches of the neckband. Trim your bias tape to the desired length and fold the ends to the inside of the tape.

Step 2.
Stitch the bias tape to the neckband, following the stitches of the neckband.

Step 3.
Finish the raw edge of your neckband as per your instructions/tutorial.

Step 4.
Press the neckband down, towards the inside of the garment.

Step 5.
Pin the bias tape down.

Step 6.
Topstitch the bias tape.

Step 7. Admire your work!

Finish the rest of your garment and soak in the richness of your garment!! And don't forget to share your projects on our Sew & Tell Facebook group!

Why do you not go up as far as the shoulder seam, wouldn’t that look neater,

Does the bias band you insert have to be a knit or can it be a woven piece of fabric, too?
I take it this leaves a rectangular line of stitches on the outside of the top? Thanks, Nadia
